UNIFIL extension mandate faces UN deadlock as Lebanon seeks to prevent Israeli withdrawal

Breaking

Lebanon has submitted an official request to the UN Security Council demanding an extension of the UNIFIL mandate, seeking to prevent the planned withdrawal of the peacekeeping force by the end of the year, according to documents revealed by Financial Times and reported by Israel Hayom.

France has backed Lebanon’s position, citing concerns about a potential security vacuum in the region. However, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon clarified in a closed session that Israel’s position on the matter is final and that the withdrawal decision stands firm.

The United States position on the issue remains unclear at this stage. The confrontation at the UN underscores the broader tensions surrounding Israel’s security arrangements in northern border regions.
